Therefore karate and kobudo are like two wheels on a cart – one helps the other but one without the other is incomplete.” – Murakami Kataumi kjiyu

The bong is a fundamental weapon and training tool in Tang Soo Do. Traditionally, the staff is often taught from the context of being the student’s first sword.  It tests the seriousness of the student’s will to study and improve.  It is an opportunity to teach the student a healthy respect for the weapon they are learning, and the serious nature of weapon training.  The lessons learned in staff will carry over to sword, nunchaku, cane and any other weapon.

Unfortunately, bong is an often neglected weapon.  With the weight of an empty-hand curriculum, bong must often take a backseat to empty handed skills.  Often, when the student has an opportunity to practice weapons, they look past the bong to other “complex” weapons.

The staff is a simple weapon, yet opens the door to new horizons in a student’s training.  Together, we will use the staff to learn about lanes and paths of motion, and other concepts that can be applied to any weapon as well as your empty-hand skill set.

By setting aside a half-day for training, we will not only cover more material than in a normal staff class, but give ourselves plenty of time to experiment and ask questions as we explore this weapon together.

RSVP by Tuesday, October 13.
