Speaking of Summer, just a reminder that as the heat index begins to climb, make sure to drink plenty of fluids before class. In addition, students are encouraged to wear a t shirt to class, but bring their uniforms tops along just in case.

Please note: The Saturday morning Family class will change to a traditional Youth class held from 9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m.

Second, registration for the Winter Session has begun and will continue through the holiday break. Students can register in person, over the phone (740-345-9622), or online at the Licking County YMCA Western Branch website. Click on Register Online and you can create your own account, view class availability and register. The session will begin on Monday, Januray 3, 2011.

Third, this is the last week of classes for the Fall Session. There will be a break from December 20th until January 3rd. Please enjoy your time off and have a safe and happy holiday season!

Please use your best judgment in deciding if it safe to leave your house. We can make up student tests if necessary

Photos from the Parade are now in the photo album. Thanks to everyone for coming out for this great event. We met a lot of people in town! We made over 1000 flyers and managed to give them out by the halfway point.

If you missed the demo, you missed out on a great memory. In spite of the pouring rain, we had students from age 3 and up show their very best Tang Soo Do spirit and put on a great show for the parents, sound techs and the carnival operators who hadn’t yet run for shelter. While it wasn’t quite the smashing PR success we had planned on, we hope it will prove to be a great memory for all who participated.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

For all of the street fair events, students should wear their full dobahk (uniform) as well as gym shoes. Since all activities will be taking place outside and on the hot black top, it is important that students have the proper protective footwear. Students should NOT wear sandals, flip flops or any other shoe that will not offer stability or that can easily come off of their feet.

Drink plenty of water before the events! The weather will most likely be hot the day of the street fair. Please make sure you or your student is well hydrated before, during and after each event. Students may bring a water bottle with them.

It is highly suggested that students wear a T-shirt under their uniform. This way they can remove the jacket of their uniform when they are not participating in the parade or the demonstration.

PARADE:

The parade will begin at 12:00 p.m.; students participating in the parade need to meet at Foundation Park at 10:45 a.m. Students also need to have completed and returned the Parade Permission Slip before they will be allowed to board the float. It is imperative that the instructors have this information in the event of an emergency. No student will be permitted to participate if this information has not been provided! Following the parade, the float will return to the Y where the kids will be able to participate in an ice cream social until they are picked up by their parents.

DEMONSTRATION:

The demonstration is scheduled to begin between 4:45 and 5:00 p.m. in front of the main stage at the intersection of Main and Depot. We will meet in the parking lot on the southeast corner of the intersection near the Chet’s Auto Repair sign no later than 4:30 p.m. This is also where students will be taken after the demo. to be picked up by their parents. Since the performance will take place on the black top, we will perform in our shoes. Again, it is very important that students wear stable footwear that will not come off of their feet when they perform their techniques. Students that do not wear acceptable footwear will not be permitted to participate in the demonstration!

A few months ago, we did a demonstration for the local Cub Scout pack. In addition to demonstrating Tang Soo Do, we also led a great safety and self-defense seminar that was a lot of fun for everyone involved. Pictures are available here.

Adult Testing

The adult test will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at The Ohio State University in conjunction with Buckeye Tang Soo Do. The test will be held in room B134 of the RPAC.

PLEASE NOTE: The test has been relocated from room A200 to room B134 and this room number is different from the one listed in the testing letters!

Testing begins at 1:00 p.m. and students should arrive no later than 12:30 p.m. to give themselves ample time to walk from the garage to the facilities, change and warm up. The easiest place to park is in the Neil Avenue Parking Garage for $3.00. Here are directions showing how to get to the Neil Ave. Garage from the Y.

Youth Test

The youth test will take place on Sunday, August 1, 2010, at the Licking County Family YMCA Western Branch in the same location that classes take place. The test will begin at 2:00 p.m. and students should arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. in order to change, complete any lingering paperwork and warm up.

Tiny Tiger Tests

The Tiny Tiger belt tests will take place in class on Monday, August 2nd and Wednesday, August 4th. Promotions will take place at the end of the class and at this time each student will receive his/her new belt and a certificate of achievement. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend and should bring cameras if you wish to take pictures.

When/Where/Directions

Students from Buckeye Tang Soo Do will be at the different exits, pointing you in the right direction.

What do I need to know?

All students are responsible for knowing the material on their rank sheet. Each section is graded on a percentage basis. Students may be asked to think outside of the box and apply their knowledge in a new and challenging way. Show good spirit and do your best!

What do I need to bring?

All students should bring their uniform and Gup manual. Children will not spar at this exam, but adults should bring their mouthpiece, and any additional protective gear they wish to use.

How Much does it Cost?

The cost for testing is $25.00 (cash or check made out to Columbus Tang Soo Do Academy) and it is due by the day of the test. Please see me if you need to make alternate arrangements.

Last thing…

RELAX! If this is your first testing, just be ready to do your best and show your best spirit. You aren’t expected to know everything or do everything perfectly. All of the graders started just like you, and they remember their first test very well. Make sure you are well hydrated and have a good dinner the night before!
